Rimonabant
Basic Information about Rimonabant
Rimonabant is the generic name for a new diet pill sold under the brand names Acomplia (Europe) and Zimulti (U.S.). The pills are sold as 20 mg film-coated tablets and are used to treat obesity in conjunction with diet and exercise. Rimonabant pill works by blocking CB-1 receptors in the brain and in fat cells so that hunger is suppressed.
In addition to the active ingredient in Rimonabant, the tablets contain cornstarch, lactose monohydrate, povidone K30, croscarmellose sodium, sodium laurilsulfate, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate. The coating consists of lactose monohydrate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, and macrogol. The pills are polished with carnauba wax.
Warnings
Do not take Rimonabant pill if you are pregnant or may become pregnant or if you are breast-feeding. Do not take Rimonabant if you are allergic to the active ingredient or to any of the inactive ingredients in the pill. Before taking Rimonabant pill, tell your doctor if you have impaired liver or kidney function or if you are being treated for epilepsy.
Children under the age of 18 should not use Rimonabant.Certain medications, specifically those known as CYP3A4 inhibitors, can enhance the effects of Rimonabant. Tell your doctor is you are taking any of the following:
- itraconazole (antifungal)
- ketaconazole (antifungal)
- ritonavir (for HIV infections)
- telithromycin (antibiotic)
- clarithromycin (antibiotic)
- nefazodone (antidepressant)
Also tell your doctor is you are taking other medications, including other diet pills, cholesterol medications, diabetes medications, antidepressants or epilepsy medications.
Rimonabant pills contain lactose. People who are lactose intolerant should consult with a doctor before using Rimonabant.
Take Rimonabant only as prescribed. The usual dose is one 20 mg tablet in the morning before eating. The tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed.
When taken as directed, Rimonabant should not interfere with your ability to drive or to operate machinery. However, it is wise to use caution until you are sure how you will react to the pills.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take the pill in the morning, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the end of the day when you remember, skip that day's pill and resume taking Rimonabant the next morning. Do not take a double dose of Rimonabant. If you accidentally take more Rimonabant than you should, call your doctor immediately.
